NHS Trauma Informed Care Training

The brief

Solent NHS Trust approached us to help them create a new interactive eLearning course to teach users about trauma and the implications of trauma for service delivery. They had identified a need for new trauma informed training as all healthcare professionals are likely to encounter traumatised individuals during the delivery of professional services. Solent NHS Trust had developed an offline training presentation to try and meet this need, but wanted this to be delivered in an interactive format with a more engaging style.

The source presentation covered a multitude of complex psychological topics, many of which included specialist jargon and terminologies. Solent NHS Trust also wanted to include a section in the course dedicated to veteran focused trauma informed services due to the challenges veterans face during and after service.

I had a great experience with Hyperfine Media. They spent a good deal of time getting to know the subject matter and developed creative images and design for our animated e-learning package. They are easy to work with and I'm very happy with the package they produced and recommend them.

Our solution

To ensure the eLearning course was accessible to any healthcare professional without a prior understanding of trauma or psychology, we needed to make the content concise and easy to understand. We split the existing learning materials into topics that would then become individual modules. Each module was comprised of written content, illustrations, animations, and quizzes to ensure the modules were engaging. Animations were used throughout the course to soften emotionally challenging subject matter in a sensitive and stylised way. The eLearning course was made accessible by including an optional voice over throughout each module, optional subtitles, and accessibility features.

Our process

We took a phased approach to the project and worked closely with the client to ensure that each asset and word aligned with their vision. We also met a service lead at a veteran support organisation to ensure that the veteran course material was representative of this demographic.

We initially worked with the client in a consultancy capacity. We helped the client to define the core eLearning course content and structure based on their existing training presentation and our prior experience of developing eLearning content
We then moved onto scripting. We wrote each module of the course, the animation scripts and quiz content. Our primary objective was to make the training materials accessible and understandable for all audiences without losing any of the meaning

Design & development

The design phase of the project involved designing a bespoke module template that reflected the tone of the course material whilst maintaining an accessible look and feel. We also designed a set of stylised illustrations that would help soften the emotive content in both the modules and animations
Once the script and course content materials were signed off by the client, we recorded the voiceover for each module and animation
We then combined these assets to develop the eLearning course that went through rigorous testing internally, and was shared with the client’s wider team for feedback and final sign off

The Results

Solent NHS Trust was delighted with the Trauma Informed Care eLearning Course we produced. The finished course was comprised of 10 modules. Each learning module featured a set of bespoke illustrations, a series of topic specific animations, and a quiz based on what the user would have learned during the module. The eLearning course was provided to the client in both an online format and as files that are compatible with eLearning platforms to be uploaded to individual organisations eLearning platforms. The eLearning course is now being used by Solent NHS Trust to train existing and new healthcare professionals across the NHS and partner organisations.
